What are dog years?
Dog years express a dog's age as the equivalent human age, so owners can picture where their pet stands in life. A dog year is not a fixed unit: the first year counts as roughly 15 human years, the second as 9 more, and later years as 4 to 7 each depending on size.
The phrase "dog years" answers a simple question: if my dog were a person, how old would they be? Dogs and people hit similar milestones at very different calendar ages. A dog reaches sexual maturity, full adult size and a complete set of adult teeth within its first year, which is why the AVMA treats that first year as roughly 15 human years.
After the growth spurt, aging slows and becomes steadier. That is how dog years work: a fast first two years, then a fixed number of human years for every dog year, set by adult size. A dog year is a sliding conversion, not a fixed unit.
How are dog years calculated?
Dog years are calculated in three steps. Count the first year as 15 human years, count the second year as 24 total, then add a fixed amount for every additional year: 4 for toy and small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant breeds. A 5-year-old Labrador is therefore 42.
So how are dog years calculated in practice? The method described by the AKC and the AVMA has three steps:
- Under 1 year: 3 months equals 5 human years, 6 months 10, 9 months 12.5 and 12 months 15.
- Year 2 brings the total to 24.
- Every later year adds 4 (toy under 10 lb, small 10 to 20 lb), 5 (medium 21 to 50 lb), 6 (large 51 to 90 lb) or 7 (giant over 90 lb).

Example: a 65 lb Labrador is large, so at 5 years old it is 24 + (3 × 6) = 42 human years.
How many dog years is 1 human year?
One dog year is worth about 15 human years while a dog is under 1, about 9 during the second year, and 4 to 7 for each adult year after that. In reverse, 1 human year passes in 3 to 4 weeks for a young puppy and 2 to 3 months for an adult dog.
Because dog years are a sliding scale, the answer changes with age. The calculator's milestones:
- 3 months: 5 human years.
- 6 months: 10.
- 9 months: 12.5.
- 1 year: 15, a teenager.
- 2 years: 24, a young adult.
- Each year after: 4 to 7 human years, so one human year passes in 2 to 3 dog months.
So how many years is a dog year? It depends on where your dog is on the curve. For an adult small dog, one calendar year adds 4 human years; for an adult Great Dane, the same 12 months add 7, which is why a yearly checkup covers far more biological change for a giant breed than for a Chihuahua.
Why is the multiply by 7 rule wrong?
The multiply-by-7 rule is wrong because dogs do not age at a constant rate. It dates from the 1950s, when people lived about 70 years and dogs about 10, so 7 was simply the ratio. A 1-year-old dog is actually closer to 15 human years, not 7, and a 10-year-old small dog is 56, not 70.
The rule survived because it was easy, not because it was accurate. Compare it with the size-adjusted model:
- 1-year-old: rule says 7, model says 15.
- 2-year-old: 14 versus 24.
- 5-year-old medium dog: 35 versus 39.
- 10-year-old Great Dane: 70 versus 80.
- 15-year-old Chihuahua: 105 versus 76.
Multiplying by 7 badly underestimates puppies and young adults, roughly matches medium dogs in midlife, undercounts giant breeds and overcounts long-lived small dogs. A 15-year-old toy dog is a healthy senior, not a 105-year-old, and the rule can mislead owners about what their dog actually needs at each stage of life.
What did the UCSD DNA study find?
In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego compared DNA methylation in 104 Labrador retrievers with human data and found dogs age on a logarithmic curve. Their formula, human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, puts a 1-year-old dog at 31 human years, a 5-year-old at 57 and a 10-year-old at 68.
The Wang et al. study in Cell Systems measured methylation (chemical tags that accumulate on DNA with age) in 104 Labrador retrievers aged 4 weeks to 16 years and matched the patterns to human data. The best fit was a natural logarithm: very fast aging early, then a flattening curve.

The two methods agree around 8 to 10 years and diverge at both ends. Because the DNA clock covers one breed and only applies from 1 year on, Pawometer offers it as an optional Science mode rather than the default.
Do dog years differ by breed size?
Yes. Large and giant breeds age faster in adulthood and live shorter lives, so the calculator adds 6 or 7 human years per dog year for them versus 4 for small dogs. A 2013 study in The American Naturalist found every extra 4.4 lb of body mass cuts about a month off expected lifespan.
Body size is the strongest predictor of aging speed. Kraus, Pavard and Promislow (2013) analyzed mortality records for tens of thousands of dogs and concluded that large breeds do not start aging earlier; they age faster once adult, and every extra 2 kg (4.4 lb) costs roughly a month of life expectancy.
That is why the calculator groups dogs by adult weight and uses these average lifespans: toy 14 years, small 13, medium 12, large 11 and giant 8.5. The effect compounds: a 10-year-old Chihuahua is 56 in human years, a 10-year-old Great Dane 80. Breed matters mostly through weight; a 70 lb mixed breed ages like a Labrador regardless of ancestry.
How accurate is any dog age formula?
No dog age formula is exact. The size-adjusted model is accurate to within a few human years for typical dogs, while the DNA clock is a research tool calibrated on one breed. Both are estimates of biological age, not measurements. For health decisions, rely on your vet's life-stage assessment rather than a single number.
Treat any result as a well-informed estimate. The size model captures growth speed and adult weight but cannot see genetics, diet, dental health or body condition. Two things move the needle:
- Spay or neuter status: Banfield's 2013 State of Pet Health report found sterilized dogs lived about a year longer, so the calculator adds 1 year of expected lifespan for them.
- Life stage: the 2019 AAHA guidelines define senior status as the last 25 percent of expected lifespan, a more useful marker than a single human-age number.
Use the number to plan. If your dog's human age lands in the late 50s or beyond, schedule twice-yearly checkups.
